The 2026 NFL season is nearly here, and the AFC East remains one of the league’s most intriguing divisions. The New England Patriots enter as defending champions after a 14-3 campaign and Super Bowl appearance, while the Buffalo Bills look to reclaim supremacy. The New York Jets and Miami Dolphins face steep rebuilds with massive roster overhauls.

New England Patriots: Defending Champions Face Regression Questions

The Patriots finished 14-3 in 2025, won the AFC East, and reached the Super Bowl before falling short. Roster turnover was more significant than typical for a contender. Key departures include leading receiver Demario Douglas, tight end Austin Hooper, several offensive linemen, and safety Jalen Hawkins (now with Baltimore).  

Additions center on wide receiver AJ Brown, Romeo Doubs, and draft picks including tackle Caleb Lomu and tight end Eli Raridon. The defense retains its core but lost some productive rotational pieces. Drake May took 47 sacks last season, highlighting ongoing offensive-line concerns even after upgrades on paper.  

Harold Landry begins camp on the PUP list with an undisclosed injury—something to monitor given his role as a top pass-rusher.  

Fantasy notes: Drake May (QB3-5) and AJ Brown (WR8-9) form a popular but expensive stack that may not justify the premium. Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson remain in a committee; Stevenson holds the edge as the trusted veteran and goal-line back, while Henderson offers higher boom potential.  

2025 stats: Offense ranked 3rd in yards and 2nd in points; defense ranked 8th in yards and 4th in points allowed with a modest +3 turnover differential.  

Win total: 10.5  

Best Bets:  

  • Make the playoffs but lose in the Wild Card round (+230) 
  • Bills finish 1st, Patriots 2nd in the division (+130)
  • Rhamondre Stevenson Over 600.5 rushing yards (-114) and Over 6.5 rushing touchdowns (+135)
  • TreVeyon Henderson Over 699.5 rushing yards (-110)

The roster remains talented enough for double-digit wins, but repeating 14 victories is unlikely.

New York Jets: Talent on Paper, Questions Everywhere

The Jets went 3-14 in 2025 and responded with wholesale changes. Both quarterbacks (Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor) are gone, along with several defensive contributors.  

Geno Smith arrives as the new starter alongside a strong supporting cast: Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, a top-tier offensive line, and a promising rookie class featuring Omar Cooper, Kenyon Sadiq, and others. Defensive additions include Quinnen Williams trade return pieces and edge help.  

Kenyon Sadiq is recovering from hernia surgery and suffered a minor setback in camp, raising concerns about early-season readiness for a rookie.  

Fantasy notes: Breece Hall (RB14-16) benefits from an improved line and less rushing competition from the quarterback. Sadiq (TE20-23) carries upside but faces injury and opportunity risks behind Mason Taylor.  

2025 stats: Offense ranked 29th in yards and points (dead last in passing); defense ranked 25th in yards and 31st in points with a league-worst -19 turnover differential and zero interceptions.  

Win total: 5.5  

Best Bets:  

  • Breece Hall Over 899.5 rushing yards (-110) and Over 1,000 yards (+125 to +225 depending on book)
  • Kenyon Sadiq Under 449.5 receiving yards (-110)

The last-place schedule offers some softer spots, but Geno Smith’s interception tendencies and defensive questions keep expectations modest.

Miami Dolphins: Total Rebuild Under Jeff Hafley 

Miami finished 7-10 in 2025 and enters 2026 with an NFL-record dead-cap situation and near-total roster turnover. Mike McDaniel, Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Darren Waller, and nearly the entire defensive core are gone.  

New head coach Jeff Hafley inherits Malik Willis at quarterback, a first-round tackle in Canaan Proctor, and a mixed draft class. De’Von Achane remains the clear centerpiece.  

Wide receiver Chris Bell (ACL) is expected to miss the early portion of the season. Two cornerbacks are also dealing with injuries.  

Fantasy notes: Achane (RB5-7) should see massive volume as both a rusher and receiver. Malik Willis (QB21) offers rushing upside as a high-upside backup option.  

2025 stats: Offense ranked 26th in yards and 25th in points; defense ranked 22nd in yards and 24th in points with a -4 turnover differential.  

Win total: 4.5  

Best Bets:  

  • Stay away from the team win total (too low to under, too risky to over) 
  • De’Von Achane Over 974.5 rushing yards (-110), Over 1,000 yards (+120), Over 1,250 yards (+425), and Over 57.5 receptions (-115)
  • Malik Willis Over 3.5 rushing touchdowns (-160) and 10+ rushing touchdowns (14-to-1)

The offensive line is better than perceived, and Achane is positioned for a massive individual season regardless of team results.  

Buffalo Bills: Changing Of The Guard 

The Bills posted a 12-5 record in 2025 but lost the division. Turnover is unusually high for a contender: Sean McDermott is out, along with key defenders Joey Bosa, Matt Milano, Taron Johnson, and others, plus several skill players.  

Joe Brady was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach. DJ Moore arrives as the primary wide-receiver addition, and Bradley Chubb joins the defensive front. The secondary and linebacker groups will feature many new faces.  

Tyrell Shavers (ACL) is likely to miss significant time. Safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is dealing with a calf strain but should be ready for Week 1.  

Fantasy notes: DJ Moore (WR25) offers value as a potential WR1 in a high-powered offense. Dalton Kincaid (TE12-14) is healthier than in recent seasons and carries top-10 upside.  

2025 stats: Offense ranked 4th in yards and points (1st in rushing); defense ranked 7th in yards and 12th in points, with the league’s best pass defense but 28th against the run.  

Win total: 10.5  

Best Bets:  

  • Over 10.5 wins (-120)
  • Under 10.5 wins (+105) — another rare split
  • Miss the playoffs (+270)
  • James Cook Over 10.5 rushing touchdowns (+110)
  • Dalton Kincaid Over 425.5 receiving yards (-120) and Over 750 yards (+290)

A tough early schedule and defensive questions create legitimate under value, even with Josh Allen still under center.
