“Week 1 college football preview with six game breakdowns, public-fade spots, a two-unit lock, a money-line dog, and two parlays after an 8-1 Week 0.”
Week 0 delivered an 8-1 betting record and 10 units. Week 1 is the first full slate: Thursday through Monday, six featured games, and a clear theme of fading inflated hype. All plays are one unit except the lock (two units) and parlays (half unit). Lines referenced are opening DraftKings numbers with shopped alternatives noted where they improved.
The board leans home dogs and continuity over portal hype and first-year rebuilds.

Week 0 Recap and Eligibility Chaos
Week 0 was the appetizer. Defenses coached by Bill Belichick still make the halftime adjustments that close games. Stanford covering against Hawaii produced one of the louder sweats of the young season. Virginia’s offensive line and Bo Pribula’s legs exposed an NC State staff that admitted after the game it did not realize the quarterback was a runner.
The bigger off-field story is eligibility. LSU has two former NFL players practicing and a court date that could decide whether they dress. Game rosters lock Friday. Playing them risks conference penalties. More important for Week 1: bringing in outsiders two weeks before kickoff after players spent the entire offseason competing for those snaps is a culture risk, especially against a program that has been together for years
Liberty at James Madison
Saturday, Sept. 5, noon ET, Bridgeforth Stadium.
JMU -6.5 (-258) | Liberty +6.5 (+210 ML) | Total 50.5
Weather: partly sunny, 78°.
JMU went 12-2 and made the playoff last year, then lost its head coach and a large chunk of production. Only four starters return. A first-year starter is at quarterback. Liberty went 4-8 but lost three overtime games to close the season and returns 12 starters plus quarterback Kaidon Salter’s successor and running back Kanye Udoh. Last year’s meeting was 10-10 before Liberty’s quarterback left with an injury.
Both sides of the board land on Liberty +6.5 (plus-100 available). JMU should still win the game, but six and a half points is too many for a first-year staff and a brand-new roster in Week 1. Liberty’s schedule does not get harder than this; a cover here keeps a long-shot playoff ticket (70-1) alive.
Oklahoma State at Tulsa
Saturday, Sept. 5, 3:45 p.m. ET, H.A. Chapman Stadium.
Oklahoma State -13.5 (-535) | Tulsa +13.5 (+400 ML) | Total 58.5
Weather: sunny, 99°.
Oklahoma State went 1-11, fired Mike Gundy, and imported Eric Morris plus Heisman-hyped quarterback Drew Mestemaker and a wave of North Texas transfers. The public comparison to Indiana’s portal rebuild is premature. Morris’s best year at North Texas came against a soft American schedule. Tulsa beat this same Oklahoma State team last year, returns 15 starters, and has a second-year coach who already has the system installed.
Both sides take Tulsa +13.5 (-110). Week 1 in-state rivalry, home dog, and a step up in competition for the new Cowboys pieces is a classic spot to fade the number.
Betting splits backed the fade: Oklahoma State drew 70% of bets but only 46% of handle.

Clemson at LSU
Saturday, Sept. 5, 7:30 p.m. ET, Tiger Stadium.
LSU -10 (-360) | Clemson +10.5 (+285 ML) | Total 51.5
Weather: clear, 88°.
LSU is ranked 11th after a 7-6 season and the nation’s top portal class, including quarterback Sawyer Levit. Clemson is the same 7-6 team almost nobody is talking about. Dabo Swinney’s roster is homegrown. The new offensive coordinator is a return to a more physical, vertical scheme. Cade Klubnik is gone; the new starter has been in the program four years.
The eligibility fight and the decision to chase former NFL players late create an obvious locker-room question. Clemson’s defense was already good. Ten and a half points in Death Valley against a program that has been together is too many.
Both sides are on Clemson +10.5 (-120). LSU is receiving 60% of bets but only 39% of handle.

Louisville vs. Ole Miss
Sunday, Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m. ET, Nissan Stadium (Nashville, neutral site).
Ole Miss -7 (-278) | Louisville +7 (+225 ML) | Total 55.5
Weather: clear, 84°.
Ole Miss went 13-1 and returns Trinidad Chambliss. Louisville went 9-4, is ranked 24th, and brings in Lincoln Kienholz plus a healthy two-back committee. Jeff Brohm is 12-7 straight up against ranked teams at Purdue and Louisville, including wins over No. 2 Ohio State, No. 2 Iowa, No. 2 Miami, and No. 10 Notre Dame.
Ole Miss lost its top receivers and its best edge rusher when Lane Kiffin left. Four close wins last year look more lucky than sustainable. Neutral site in Nashville favors the ACC side more than Oxford would.
Both sides take Louisville +7. The Cardinals are live on the money line. Ole Miss is getting 70% of bets but only 43% of handle.
SMU at Florida State
Monday, Sept. 7, 7:30 p.m. ET, Doak Campbell Stadium.
SMU -3 (-162 ML) | Florida State +3 (+136) | Total 50.5
Weather: cloudy, 82°.
SMU is 14-2 since joining the ACC. Florida State has seven wins in two seasons. The Seminoles already played and looked ordinary against New Mexico State, a bottom-feeder in the weakest Group of Five conference. The game was one score late. Kevin Jennings is a fifth-year starter and proven winner. Rhett Lashlee has five years of consistent results. Mike Norvell’s recent rosters have shown poor discipline.
The number has barely moved from -2.5 two months ago. That is a trap line built on last year’s Alabama opener, not on what Florida State showed last week.
Both sides hammer SMU -3. Alternate numbers (SMU -6.5 +137, SMU -13.5 +319) are also in play if the game gets out of hand early. SMU is drawing 84% of bets and 96% of handle for a reason.
Best Bets
Lock (2 units): SMU -3. Clear talent, coaching, and quarterback edges on the road against a team that already needed a late push to put away New Mexico State.
Money-line dog (1 unit): Louisville +225. Brohm versus ranked teams plus a true neutral site.
Three-team spread parlay (half unit, 6-1): Louisville +7, Clemson +10.5, Tulsa +13.5.
Teased version (Louisville +3.5, Clemson +6.5, Tulsa +7.5) is plus-1225.
Money-line round robin (half unit): Liberty, Tulsa, and Louisville. Straight three-team parlay sits around 55-1.
The same three themes keep appearing: fade portal hype in Week 1, back continuity and home (or neutral) dogs, and do not lay double-digit numbers against programs that have been together for years. Shop the numbers, especially the Liberty and Clemson plus-money alternatives, and treat the SMU side as the strongest single play on the board.
