“Get our Week 3 college football preview with six game breakdowns, home-dog spots, a two-unit lock, a money-line dog, a parlay, and a teaser.”

Week 3 college football preview with six game breakdowns, home-dog spots, a two-unit lock, a money-line dog, and parlays after a first losing week that still left the season ledger green. Week 2 finished 7-10. It was the first losing week. The season mark sits at 26-16-2 and about seven units up. Locks are 4-0-2. All plays are one unit except the lock (two units) and parlays (half unit). The board still leans home dogs in rivalry or revenge spots, fading look-ahead spots and first-year coaching edges, and using totals when both offenses look limited.

Power Rankings

Alabama handled Kentucky after a close first half and looked like an SEC team that can travel. Michigan shoved Oklahoma around after a Week 1 scare, with the defense making John Mateer look ordinary. Mississippi State wrecked Minnesota on the road in an unfamiliar Big Ten environment. Boise State remains a tough out on the blue turf and sits in the Group of 6 mix.
Oregon needed a late push against Oklahoma State at home after barely beating Boise State. Oklahoma’s offense stalled and turned it over against Michigan. Texas Tech has not looked like a Big 12 title favorite in either win. Washington has not played anyone of note and is dealing with offensive injuries.

Houston at Texas Tech

Friday, Sept. 18, 8:00 ET, Galaxy Stadium, Lubbock
Houston +7.5 (+245 ML) | Texas Tech -7.5 (-305) | Total 53.5

Weather: 87 degrees, sunny, possible afternoon storms that should clear.

Both teams are 2-0. They share a common opponent in Oregon State. Houston beat the Beavers 33-20 at home. Texas Tech won 35-24 on the road in a game that stayed one-score until late and featured a questionable offensive pass-interference call that helped the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech was a preseason Big 12 darling but has looked sloppy. Will Hammond is working back from an ACL tear, and the staff is still mixing in Thomas Castellanos. Houston has the veteran quarterback in Connor Weigman and the veteran coach in Willie Fritz. The Coogs were a nine-win team last year and are flying under the radar in the Big 12. Betting splits show 69 percent of bets and 89 percent of the handle on Houston. The public and the sharps are on the same side.

Take Houston +7.5 (-114 at FanDuel). The money line is live. This profiles as a one-score game, not a comfortable home cover for a team still finding its quarterback.

North Carolina at Clemson

Saturday, Sept. 19, noon ET, Memorial Stadium
UNC +3.5 (+140 ML) | Clemson -3.5 (-166) | Total 44.5
Weather: 86 degrees and sunny.

UNC is 2-0. Clemson is 1-1 after the LSU embarrassment and a sloppy home win over Georgia Southern. Clemson is turning to freshman Tate Reynolds after an elbow injury to Cade Klubnik. Bill Belichick’s defense gets an inexperienced passer. UNC’s defense looked solid in Dublin. Clemson’s offense has not shown much. Splits show 58 percent of bets and 70 percent of handle on UNC. The under is drawing 99 percent of the handle on DraftKings.

Take the under 44.5 (-110 at FanDuel). Both offenses have limitations. A 17-10 or 20-13 script is more likely than 30-plus combined. UNC +3.5 is the side play if you want a number.

SMU at Louisville

Saturday, Sept. 19, 3:30 p.m. ET, L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium
SMU +1.5 (-105 ML) | Louisville -1.5 (-115) | Total 59.5
Weather: 94 degrees and sunny.

SMU is 2-0. Louisville is 1-1 after taking Ole Miss to the wire. This is a massive ACC game for College Football Playoff positioning. Both offenses can score. Louisville’s run game and home environment get the slight edge for some, while SMU’s veteran quarterback Kevin Jennings and 15-2 ACC record since joining the league get the edge for others. Splits show 72 percent of bets and 87 percent of handle on Louisville, with heavy over action.

Take Louisville money line (-115). Jeff Brohm typically plays up in these spots at home. The one-point spread is not worth chasing.

Florida at Auburn

Virginia Tech at Maryland

Saturday, Sept. 19, 7:30 p.m. ET, SECU Stadium
Virginia Tech -3 (-142 ML) | Maryland +3 (+120) | Total 53.5
Weather: 79 and clear.

James Franklin’s first year at Virginia Tech. He is 8-1 against Maryland in recent history with an average score of 42-10. He has personal history with the program that passed on him. Maryland has returning production and a capable quarterback in Malik Washington, but the schedule so far has been light. Splits are heavy on Virginia Tech and the under.

Take Virginia Tech -3. Franklin will treat this as a statement game. Maryland’s September success usually fades when the opponent gets real.

LSU at Ole Miss

Best Bets

Lock (2 units): North Carolina-Clemson under 44.5. Neither offense has shown it can consistently move the ball against a decent front. A low-20s total is the cleanest number on the board.

Money-line dog (1 unit): Auburn +120. Home underdog in a game both sides treat as a season-definer, against a Florida team that has not been tested.

Three-team Moneyline parlay (half unit, 19-1): Houston, North Carolina, Ole Miss. Three dogs or close numbers in spots where experience, coaching, or revenge edges exist.

Six-point teaser (half unit): Texas Tech -1.5, North Carolina-Clemson under 50.5, Maryland +9.
