AP Top 25

The SEC is hanging on at the bottom with Missouri and Kentucky at 24 and 25. Florida’s jump from 22 to 8 after beating Ole Miss was the loudest move on the board. Ole Miss only slid a couple of spots. A drop into the mid-teens felt more natural, with Florida landing somewhere from 10 to 15. Iowa moved up and still is not getting full respect.
Tennessee played somebody, lost a close one at home to the No. 1 team, and barely moved. Oklahoma State is getting a little shine after beating West Virginia and hanging with Oregon. Mississippi State is starting to show. Boise State has a clear hold on the Group of Six playoff spot after the win at Michigan.

Trending up:
Iowa, Georgia, and Florida. Iowa won in the Big House. Georgia did what Georgia should do to an Oklahoma team that is not very good right now. Florida dismantled Ole Miss in the Swamp, the classic letdown spot after Ole Miss’s emotional win over LSU.

Trending down: Penn State, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M. Penn State lost its Big Ten opener at home in a whiteout to Wisconsin, a bad loss even with a receiver out. Indiana needed luck and the environment to get past Northwestern. Oklahoma and Texas A&M looked dead on arrival in back-to-back bad performances, and Marcel Reed has not looked like the same quarterback. Those two may need to be pronounced dead. Indiana and Penn State still have more promise. They just finally played someone.

Pitt At Virginia Tech

Friday, Oct. 2, 7 p.m. ET, Lane Stadium
Virginia Tech -3.5 (-162) | Pitt +3.5 (+120 to +136) | Total 54.5
Blacksburg. 75 degrees, partly cloudy.

Both teams are 4-0, and neither has played much. Pitt’s path was Syracuse, UCF, Miami (Ohio), and Bucknell. Virginia Tech’s was Boston College, Maryland, Old Dominion, and VMI. The winner belongs in the Top 25 conversation.

Pitt is the sharp side: 75% of the bets and 95% of the money on the Panthers plus the points, 38% of the bets and 84% of the money on the under, and 49% of the bets with 81% of the money on the Pitt moneyline. Pat Narduzzi is 7-0 on Thursday nights and 4-1 on Friday nights, 11-1 on weeknights overall. Mason Heintschel is 4-0 as a road starter, including trips to Florida State and a then-ranked Georgia Tech. Pitt is one of the better offenses in the country by yardage, sixth through the air, with the run game still a notch behind. The defensive line and linebackers are built to slow Jeff Overton, Virginia Tech’s best weapon so far. The pass defense is the soft spot, which is where the points should come.

Blacksburg at night is a real environment, and a last-minute field goal that kills the clock is the scare. Still, this is a Narduzzi weeknight dog.

Pick: Pitt +3.5 (available -110) and over 52.5.

Navy At Air Force

Saturday, Oct. 3, 12 p.m. ET, Falcon Stadium
Air Force -3.5 (-170) | Navy +3.5 | Total 46.5
Air Force Academy. 66 degrees and sunny.

Alabama At Mississippi State

Saturday, Oct. 3, Davis Wade Stadium
Alabama -5.5 (-218) | Mississippi State +5.5 (+180) | Total 61.5
Starkville. 76 degrees, partly cloudy.

No. 17 Alabama at No. 16 Mississippi State, both 4-0. The money is piled on the Tide and the over: 71% of the bets and 86% of the money on Alabama -5.5, 70% of the bets and 92% of the money on the over.

They share South Carolina. Alabama won 49-18 at home. Mississippi State had to come back to win 41-34 on the road. Keelon Russell and Camario Taylor can both spin it, but this is only about Taylor’s sixth start and the best defense he has faced. Alabama’s defense is the separator. Mississippi State just got its first Top 25 win in years, something like 0-17 in ranked games before that, and the pass defense is not trustworthy even at home. Alabama looks like a top-10 team. Mississippi State’s defense is not there yet.

Pick: Alabama -5.5 (available -115). The over is live because both quarterbacks can score, but 60-plus is a lot when one defense is the clear edge.

Ohio State At Iowa

Saturday, Oct. 3, 3:30 p.m. ET, Kinnick Stadium
Ohio State -14 (-575) | Iowa +14 (+425) | Total 45.5
Iowa City. 67 degrees and sunny.

No. 5 Ohio State is 3-1 and laying two touchdowns on the road. No. 14 Iowa is 4-0. Two of Iowa’s wins were a combined 95-0 against Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa. The real results were a three-point home win over Iowa State and a one-point road win at Michigan on a last-second touchdown.

Iowa has the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense and has not seen an offense like this. Ohio State has also been ordinary in Iowa City. The teams have played there only twice in 15 years: a vacated 20-17 Ohio State win in 2010, and the 55-24 Iowa upset of No. 3 Ohio State in 2017, the only loss in Iowa City since 2004. Julian Sayin and the defense have not been fully convincing. The Illinois win was 28-10 and a two-score game into the fourth. Kirk Ferentz in a letdown spot, plus the power of Kinnick, is the angle. Iowa also has more athletes than the usual Ferentz offense: Tony Diaz, Reese Vanderzee, and tight end Bahana May.

The public is on Ohio State (63% of bets and money on the spread). The under is the sharper total. Iowa’s moneyline is the sharper side of that market: 94% of the bets but only 36% of the money on Ohio State.

Pick: Iowa +14 (-115). Ohio State has the horses to blow it open, but two touchdowns in Kinnick is too many. The Iowa moneyline at +500 is the swing ticket.

Florida At Missouri

Saturday, Oct. 3, Memorial Stadium
Florida -4.5 (-205) | Missouri +4.5 (+170) | Total 56.5
Columbia. 66 degrees.

BYU At TCU

Saturday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m. ET
BYU -6.5 (-250) | TCU +6.5 (+205) | Total 48.5
Fort Worth. 68 degrees, cloudy.

No. 10 BYU is 3-0 and laying under a touchdown. TCU is 2-2. Ninety-four percent of the bets and the money are on BYU. Fifty-nine percent of the bets and 100% of the money are on the under.
BYU has not played a murderer’s row: Arizona, Georgia Tech, Utah Tech, Colorado State. The continuity from last year is real, and the ground game is top-10. TCU is the fade. The Dublin game looked bad. The UCF loss was worse, and UCF was on a backup quarterback. The Horned Frogs have scored 13 and 10 against the two power-conference teams they have played. The switch to a power-run offense does not suit them, and Jaden Craig is turning it over. Jordan Dwyer coming back does not fix the structure. A short number on a top-10 road favorite can be a trap. The tape says TCU still cannot score.
Pick: BYU -6.5 (-110). The under 48.5 is the lower-variance cousin if the number smells.

Best Bets

Lock (2 units): BYU -6.5. TCU cannot score against power-conference defenses.

Moneyline dog (1 unit): Iowa +500. Power of Kinnick. The other plus-money dog worth a look is Pitt +136.

Moneyline parlay (half unit): Alabama, Air Force, and Florida, around +250.

Teaser: Pitt +9.5, Navy +9.5, and BYU-TCU under 54.5.

Also on the card: Florida-Missouri over 56.5, Pitt +3.5, Navy-Air Force under 47.5, Alabama -5.5, Iowa +14.
