The Detroit Lions (8-7) enter Week 17 in a must-win situation, clinging to faint playoff hopes after back-to-back losses. While the postseason path is narrow, Detroit controls what little margin remains — and this divisional matchup against Minnesota represents their most realistic opportunity to stay alive.

The Minnesota Vikings (7-8), meanwhile, have already been eliminated from playoff contention but arrive riding a three-game winning streak. Minnesota won the first meeting between these teams earlier this season and would love nothing more than to play spoiler on Christmas Day against a division rival with something still to lose.

Quarterback injuries, turnover disparity, and trench play will ultimately decide whether Detroit extends its season — or Minnesota delivers the final blow.

Detroit’s late-season stumble has left very little room for error. After losing two straight games for the first time in over three years, the Lions find themselves needing help — and a win — to keep postseason dreams alive.

Head coach Dan Campbell has stressed urgency and resilience this week, repeatedly emphasizing the need for “clean football” and finishing games. One area that remains a concern is the run game. Once the engine of Detroit’s offense, it has slowed considerably due to injuries along the offensive line, placing more pressure on Jared Goff to carry the load.

The Lions’ biggest advantage in this matchup may be ball security. Detroit has committed just eight turnovers all season, the fewest in the NFL — a critical edge against a Vikings team that has struggled mightily in that department.

Availability will be key. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Taylor Decker were both listed as DNPs early in the week, making their status worth monitoring right up until kickoff.

The Vikings enter Christmas Day on a three-game winning streak, driven largely by a defense that has played at a top-five level in EPA allowed per play over that span. That defensive surge has helped Minnesota control tempo and keep games close — a formula they’ll need again against a Detroit team fighting for its postseason life.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell reinforced that mindset this week, emphasizing focus and unity despite playoff elimination, saying the team is locked in on “winning one game on Thursday” and continuing to build off the brotherhood in the locker room.

Quarterback health remains the biggest question. Rookie J.J. McCarthy is dealing with a hand injury, and while X-rays were negative, his availability is uncertain on the short week. If he’s unable to go, undrafted rookie Max Brosmer would likely get the start — putting even more pressure on Minnesota’s defense to dictate pace and field position.

Turnovers remain the Vikings’ biggest obstacle. Minnesota has committed 29 giveaways, the most in the NFL this season. If that trend continues, it will be difficult to slow a Lions team desperate to capitalize on every mistake.
