The Kansas City Chiefs Draft Grade reflects a franchise determined to rebuild its defense while positioning itself for another run at AFC contention. Following a disappointing 6-11 campaign in 2025, Kansas City invested heavily on the defensive side of the football and added several intriguing developmental pieces around quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

KC Chiefs Overall Draft Grade: B+
The Kansas City Chiefs entered the draft with a clear objective: rebuild a defense that lost several key contributors during the offseason. General manager Brett Veach accomplished exactly that by using each of Kansas City’s first four selections on defensive players.
The draft began with a bold move up the board to secure cornerback Mansoor Delane. While the trade cost Kansas City valuable draft capital, Delane is widely viewed as one of the safest cornerback prospects in the class and fills an immediate need following the departures of Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.
The biggest win of the draft may have been Peter Woods. The Clemson defensive tackle was viewed by many evaluators as a top-15 talent and could eventually become the long-term successor to Chris Jones. Kansas City continued strengthening its defensive front by selecting R Mason Thomas, giving the organization another athletic pass-rushing option to pair with its young defensive core.
The final selection may ultimately become one of the biggest steals of the entire draft. Garrett Nussmeier unexpectedly remained available late into the seventh round, allowing the Chiefs to secure a quarterback prospect with legitimate starter upside while giving him the opportunity to develop behind Patrick Mahomes.

NFL Rookie Minicamp Results
The Chiefs held rookie minicamp from May 1-3 and welcomed 105 participants, including draft picks, undrafted free agents, and tryout players.
The biggest standout was fifth-round receiver Cyrus Allen. The former Cincinnati playmaker consistently impressed coaches throughout the weekend. Allen made several difficult catches during open sessions, including a highlight-reel toe-tap reception near the sideline that quickly became one of the camp’s most talked-about plays.
Garrett Nussmeier also drew positive reviews. The rookie quarterback demonstrated a strong command of Andy Reid’s offense, completing 9-of-14 passes during 11-on-11 drills and showing impressive accuracy throughout camp.
Defensively, Mansoor Delane spent much of the weekend adapting to Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme. Coaches reportedly came away encouraged by his football intelligence and versatility, with some observers drawing early stylistic comparisons to former Chiefs standout Trent McDuffie.
Following camp, Kansas City signed three tryout players to contracts, including offensive tackle Kahlil Benson, who has already emerged as an intriguing developmental prospect heading into training camp.
Kansas City Chiefs Updated 2026 Win Total Projection
The Chiefs enter the 2026 season with a projected win total of 10.5 victories. While that number would normally generate optimism around the league, betting markets have overwhelmingly favored the Under.
The reason is simple.
Kansas City faces one of the NFL’s toughest schedules. According to DraftKings’ strength-of-schedule metrics, the Chiefs face the fifth-hardest slate in football based on their opponents’ combined winning percentage from last season.
There is also uncertainty surrounding Patrick Mahomes’ recovery from the ACL and LCL injuries that contributed to Kansas City’s collapse during the 2025 season. While the organization remains confident he will be ready for the Denver Broncos Week 1, sportsbooks appear unwilling to fully embrace that outlook until Mahomes proves his mobility during training camp.
ESPN analyst Mike Clay projects the Chiefs for 9.9 wins, while several national analysts have forecast records closer to 9-8 than 11-6.
The recent contract extension signed by Mahomes does not materially change the 2026 outlook. The cap flexibility that allowed Kansas City to add pieces such as Kenneth Walker III was already created during an earlier contract restructuring. As a result, oddsmakers remain focused on health, schedule difficulty, and roster turnover rather than the extension itself.
The betting market is clearly expecting regression. The question is whether Mahomes’ return and an upgraded defense are enough to push Kansas City back into playoff contention and over the 10.5-win mark.
